The Augustine Committee punted on evaluating the 'safety' pedigree of the competing 'new rocket' designs. (so sayeth many detractors of the panel) Perhaps this committee, loaded with HSF safety experts , seeks information on the 'safety issue' as it relates to the competing Augustine 'recommendations', because they will use this information to reach a conclusion on what thier recommendation will be regarding future of HSF once Obama speaks.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone...and I for one love Robert's 'rants'!

"@Major Tom

Happy Thanksgiving!"

Uh, okay. Back at you.

"With the exception of Alexander, all those individuals are either NASA managers (Hanley, O’Conner) or review NASA programs (Fragola, Marshall, and Stafford)."

Actually, I forgot that Alexander is heading up the new commercial space panel on the NAC. So he also serves as a NASA program reviewer/advisor like Fragola, Marshall, and Stafford.

FWIW...

Any hint that this hearing is in relation to any specific legislation, or is it merely a "fact finding" hearing to bring in some "expert" opinions.

From my own experience, even for congressmen and senators who have critical space development industries in their respective states/districts, they know astonishingly little about either the regulatory process that already exists for human spaceflight or even much less about significant issues that are constantly talked about on the space blogosphere.

In a recent "townhall" meeting I asked my representative, Senator Bob Bennet (R- Utah) about the Ares I development and plans to continue or cancel the program to get his viewpoint on the topic. He conveniently ducked out of even answering the question by simply saying "I don't know".

This is especially astonishing as he was present for the test-firing of the Ares I rocket booster at the ATK manufacturing plant recently in Promentory, Utah. Knowing that ATK recently laid off 5,000 of his constituents, you would think he would be a little more up on the economic issues involved regarding the Constellation program and at least have an opinion on the topic.

I can only presume this is typical of most of those in Congress.

"the panel will be discussing the safety of human spaceflight from a technological standpoint, not a regulatory standpoint"

The panelists will be discussing the safety of NASA's human space flight programs. With the exception of Alexander, all those individuals are either NASA managers (Hanley, O'Conner) or review NASA programs (Fragola, Marshall, and Stafford).
