Remember Ohio, Mr. President?

That’s the message the state is trying to push, NPR reported Monday, in the wake of NASA budget proposals that would cut aeronautics funding and potentially hundreds of jobs at NASA Glenn. Area politicians are fighting the cuts, and one of them, Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora, thinks the state is due some respect from […]

US-Russian space cooperation

The “U.S.-Russia Joint Fact Sheet: Bratislava Initiatives” released by the White House today after the meeting between President Bush and President Putin includes a single sentence about space cooperation:

In the area of space cooperation, the Presidents called for enhanced cooperation, focusing on the International Space Station and other projects, including those related to possible […]

Spending political capital on NASA

Shortly after winning reelection, President Bush said, “I earned capital in the campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it.” Most of the focus on where he plans to spend that capital has been on issues like Social Security and tax reform. However, in an Orlando Sentinel article Monday Bush indicated that NASA […]

Space transportation policy finally done

The White House is scheduled to release as early as today a new space transportation policy. This is the same policy that the administration has been working on for over two years and was reportedly nearly completed at the time of the Columbia accident, after which it was put on the back burner. Space News […]

HR 5382 signed into law

There has been one significant, although not unexpected, development this past week. On Thursday President Bush signed HR 5382, the Commercial Space Transportation Amendments Act, into law. MSNBC’s Alan Boyle has a nice summary article that leads with the signing and provides an overview of the legislation and its journey to enactment.

NASA administrator lobbying effectiveness?

A colleague asked yesterday what someone could do to support the candidacy of a particular person for NASA administrator. (The topic had apparently come up on a mailing list he was on.) The only suggestion that came to mind was to call the White House comments line (202-456-1111) and tell them who the President should […]

Space and the press secretary

During a press briefing with White House press secretary Scott McClellan, a reporter (not identified by McClellan other than as “Greg”) surprisingly asked about the status of the Vision for Space Exploration, and whether it was, in the reporter’s words, “on the back burner”. McClellan’s response:

It’s reflected in our budget and I think it […]

Radzanowski’s talk is titled “Space Funding: Will Congress Support the New Space Exporation Vision?” It should prove […]

John Young and President Bush

In a letter to the editor in Monday’s Houston Chronicle, astronaut John Young mentions that he was among the Apollo veterans that met with President Bush at the White House last month. (Earlier reports had suggested that only the Apollo 11 crew met with the President.) Young said that Bush, in private, continued to strongly […]

Space transportation policy

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the Bush Administration is considering a new policy that would require the Air Force to settle on one of two EELV launch services providers—Boeing or Lockheed Martin—in the next several years. The Air Force has insisted that it needs both to provide “assured access to space” in the […]
