Presidential debate on space

Well, not quite, but this is going to be as close as we get in this campaign: the Washington Space Business Roundtable and Women in Aerospace are jointly hosting a debate between unnamed representatives of the Bush and Kerry campaigns on “The Aerospace Platforms of the Presidential Candidates”. The event is scheduled for 7:30-9:30 am on October 14 at the offices of Reed Smith, LLP in downtown Washington. Admission is limited and costs $5.

I’d like to hear something new from this but if either of them say something that they haven’t before, I’ll eat my hat.

Bush: “All that stuff I said in January.”

Kerry: “John Edwards and I…throwing out lofty goals…stem cells…energy independence…”

I’m watching the x-prize launch and I’m thinking more and more that government space exploration is either on the way out or about to undergo a major overhaul.

Damn, I wish I could attend this anyways… maybe someone who follows this website could post a synopsis of what happened after it occurs?

On an only somewhat related note, is anyone else disappointed to see that the term “aerospace” is often used interchangeably with “space”? Aerospace is too restrictive of a paradigm, and implies that air and space are a single, unified medium, particularly when you consider the history of the concept. In fact they are physically very different and treated very differently by the law and operations. If they’re talking about space policy, I wish they’d just call it “The Space Platforms of the Presidential Candidates.”

Persoanlly rather not have a synopsis. I would like an actual transcript.

Then again i’d rather have the candiates actually mention space. Not get some flunkies to say things that sound good mean nothing to try and sway this special intrest group to vote for them.

Though, if the X-Prize Cup gets off the ground (pun intended) 2008 space will probly more then just a bare mention in the platforms.

How often is auto racing or yacht racing mentioned in Presidential campaigns?

Think that question through for a second. Xprize cup is for the exapansion of the technology and get the awareness of the public to the issue. The reason why space is not supported within the presidential plaforms, it is concieved that its only a minor special intrest. One they can safely ignore this go around.

Space is almost always an issue on the polls. It was dropped from the poll a month ago as to the perceieved lack of intrest. Would you truly think it would have been dropped if the X-Prize was won 6 weeks ago? The XPrize cup will foster this public awareness and maintain it at least through the 2008 ticket. At the begining it will have a much higher short term fad type interest, which politicians could use to boost there numbewrs sightly.

if its not new its not in the public’s awareness and useless to talk about when dealing with modern issues. How many times has the influenza pandemic of 1918 been mentioned in recent Presidential Campaigns? Or the invention of the Automobile?
