Congress

Barney Frank and Mars

I was watching C-SPAN this morning (ok, I had C-SPAN on while doing other things), which broadcast a floor debate on the omnibus budget bill. Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) threw this in during his comments on the bill:

They [budget negotiators] did give into the Administration and there’s money to go to Mars. And, maybe, the homeless can ultimately live there, but, God help them, they better be able to, because they’re not going to be able to find housing here.

Frank is employing the tried and true (or tired and true, depending on your point of view) far left tactic of suggesting that space exploration means that children will starve and that the homeless will die in the streets. Walter Mondale was doing that same thing back about 1970.

    Mark,

Unlike Fritz ,he is solidly in the minority now and should be ignored as we were all those years.

Perhaps Barney is upset that there is not enough money to start a new male prostitution ring in his office.

This slimeball is a ethically challenged (not because he is gay, if it was a female prostituion ring, it would still be a huge disgrace)minority member who in a proper universe would be in prison right now for abuse of his office.

WTF is wrong with Mass. that keeps sending human refuse like Barney and the ‘bridge inspector’ back to Washington? Have they no self-esteem?

Franks comments were off target. The money is just wasted and thats enough reason not to spend it.

Its like all the money spent on the space station. just a total waste.

Well, at least Barney won’t be able to use it to further the dependancy state that has destroyed so many families.

Looks like Moon, Mars, and Beyond is fully funded, thanks to the tireless efforts of the White House, Sean O’Keefe and–of course–the Stonewall Jackson of space politics, Tom Delay.

So much for President Bush not wanting to fight for his own vision.

Looks like Moon, Mars, and Beyond is fully funded. . .

Three cheers on this point, maybe four. If true then going beyond LEO is finally the American vision for space.

We can quibble details (like lunar fueling depots) later. . .

    For now, cheers!

    :-))

Stonewall Jackson had honor. Tom DeLay has none.

Mars? Does anybody know exactly what received funding – or more specifically, what the new budget for the office of exploration will be? I.e. can NASA just throw all the extra money into Hubble and Shuttle Return to Flight, or is it specifically allocated to the new Exploration office?

This has been a very good weekend for everyone who supports space exploration. NASA and the Vision for Space Exploration have been fully funded for FY2005. In my opinion this will be the beginning of the second great exploration mission for the US and the planet, with the moon race being the first.
We also sall passage of the Commercial Space regulation bill that will allow US companies to do what they do best; innovate! This should clear the way for commercial flights to LEO in our lifetime.
The only naysayer left is Oler considering it has been done with a Republican President and Congress.
Come join the dark side Robert!
