NASA 50th anniversary hearing

Next week marks the 50th anniversary of the enactment of the National Aeronautics and Space Act, the legislation that created NASA (which itself was formally established on October 1, 1958). To mark that anniversary the House Science and Technology Committee is holding a hearing: “NASA at 50: Past Accomplishments and Future Opportunities and Challenges” on Wednesday, July 30. There is a diverse witness list: former astronaut and senator John Glenn, former Lockheed Martin CEO Norm Augustine, and MIT professor Maria Zuber. a member of the Aldridge Commission in 2004 that studied how to implement the Vision for Space Exploration.

Anniversary this, anniversary that, etc, etc. NASA is going to be 50 years old and we are expected to remember that. Why?

Every year we celebrate Yuri’s night – first man in space.
But for YEARS I have looked for any kind of official anniversary acknowledgement at all, any kind of acknowledgement, from all the space bloggers and especially from NASA for the event that occurred on July 20, 1969. The fact that the bloggers are silent every year is sad. But the fact that NASA is silent makes me sick.

Perhaps the powers-that-be are seeking to avoid comparisons between their current lunar-centric architecture and their former lunar-centric architecture.

You call that an “Official Anniversary Celebration”?
When NASA holds a Niel Armstrong night, a Buzz Aldrin night, or even just an official First Moon Landing night, then I’ll change my view. But not until. I notice that there were official pronouncements and even a couple of speaches from HQ regarding Yuri’s Night, but I looked in vain for anything similiar coming from HQ on July 20, or even July 21 (Monday); nada.
