What does Lou Holtz know about space?

That’s not a question normally asked about the former college football coach, best known for leading Notre Dame for a number of years, but is may be one increasingly asked in the months to come. The Orlando Sentinel reported this week that Holtz is weighing a run for Congress in Florida’s 24th district, which includes the Kennedy Space Center. Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas, who ousted Tom Feeney last November, currently represents the district, but is expected to face strong Republican opposition next year given the district’s demographics. Several Republicans have already either filed to run or expressed an interest in running, some citing the effects of the shuttle retirement and the gap on the district’s economy. However, one Republican consultant told the Sentinel that it would be “all but over” if Holtz decided to run, given his name recognition, although his ties to the district, where he does live, aren’t necessarily as strong as other candidates.

I don’t particularly care for her other politics, but there is no question that Kosmas has been fighting tooth and nail for the space program since she was elected. She has been punching way above her weight within the house.

My gut reaction says that a former Notre Dame football coach is not likely to fight for us with anything like the same vigor. I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • She’s not fighting for “the space program.” Or at least, she’s not fighting for making progress in space. She’s fighting for jobs in her district.

    Which is her job.

    I guess.

  • I’ve met Kosmas. While I, too, have some differences with her, I think she is supporting space R&D according to her political lights. Yes, there is the jobs in the district factor to be sure. But I don’t think that is all there is to her actions.

“On this team, we’re all united in a common goal: to keep my job.”

I think he’ll fit in very well.

Then again, wasn’t this the guy who made complementary references to Hitler’s managerial ability, and has a long conversation with Sean Hannity about the pseudoscience of global warming? In that district, the artillery is tied down and pointed straight up, not loose.
