Obama to visit Florida’s Space Coast this weekend

Florida Today reports that President Barack Obama will make a campaign stop Sunday in Florida’s Space Coast region. The appearance in Melbourne, Florida, at a time and location yet to be announced, is part of a series of visits in a state that is key to the outcome of the election. A private meeting with a small group of local residents is also planned, in addition to the public rally.

In the 2008 campaign, Obama also visited the Space Coast, giving a speech in Titusville where he discussed space briefly. Obama’s Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, has not visited the region since giving a late January speech in Cape Canaveral where he outlined his approach to space policy.

  • More on Obama’s Sunday appearance here.

The campaign sent out several press releases today. One advises that the Sunday rally is open to the public (it’s at Florida Tech), but tickets must be obtained in advance. They’re available tomorrow (Friday) at several locations.

The event is scheduled for 11:10 AM on Sunday.

As Jeff noted elsewhere, the campaign has released a space policy paper. The press release stated:

President Obama has been a champion, laying the groundwork for an ambitious and sustainable NASA program that is equipped for the exploration and innovation of the future, and today. Obama for America-Florida announces the release of accomplishments President Obama has chartered for the space program through his first term in office. From continued investments in deep space exploration to extending the life of the International Space Station, the President understands this nation must press forward, ensuring a future of investment in a suite of innovative space technology research efforts that will enable bold science and exploration missions in the future. America is strongest when we invest in the long-term, and with the President, the future of NASA and further space adventures are more secure years down the road.

So it looks like Obama will emphasize his space policy, unpopular as it has been in some quarters locally, while Romney says nothing. Obama is more popular in Melbourne, which is about 40 miles from KSC.

Presumably Sunday’s speech will talk about space, and will no doubt draw comparisons to his August 2008 Titusville speech which you can watch here on YouTube.

Me … I’m working on Sunday.

When faced with the choice between next to nothing or nothing at all, you’ll go with next to nothing. When Hillary is elected in 2016, our space pogram will again have a friend in the Oval Office.

  • Former Florida governor Charlie Crist, who was elected as a Republican, will accompany Obama this weekend in Florida according to News 13. It’s unclear if he’ll be at the Melbourne stop.

  • Florida Today published this morning this guest opinion column by Apollo astronaut Rusty Schweickart supporting President Obama’s space policy.
