While there hasn’t been a formal release by NASA, multiple reports state that Charles Bolden and Lori Garver were officially sworn in this morning as NASA administrator and deputy administrator. (NASA does have an image of Bolden arriving at his new office.) There will apparently be a more formal ceremony or other event to welcome the two to their new jobs, although nothing has been announced beyond an address to NASA employees at noon EDT Tuesday (on NASA TV).

Dear General Bolden,

I hope you (or someone from your staff) actually read this.

The current LAV on Ares I does not perform as already reported in multiple places. The LAV for a sidemount architecture would have to operate in an even more complex environment, be it on the pad or on ascent. I strongly suggest that until at least a proper ascent analysis of proximity aero and aerothermal environment for LAS motor plume be done this concept be put on hold. I also recommend a pad blast analysis as the LAV would have to survive not one but potentially two SRBs failure, augmented by an almost unavoidable ET blast.

The sidemount concept, as presented, will be even worse than the Ares I LV development issues.
